Woo~! It makes me happy that people are using this section of the forum as well as the group discussion pages! I love random chatter So let's talk about movies~! What is everyone's favourite movie and what genre do you like best? My favourite is horror, because I love scary and gory stuff I like most kinds of horror, from the cheesy predictable teen slasher flicks to the utterly terrifying leave-all-the-lights-on-at-night-for-weeks psychological scare-fests. I never watched any horror movies when I was a kid, because I was very easily scared and already had bad nightmares when I slept. When I was about 14, I went to a friend's birthday sleepover, and everyone wanted to watch "Scream"... I kind of didn't want to watch it because I thought it'd be too scary, but I didn't want to wuss out either, so I sat down and watched it with everyone... and I loved it! I was soooo scared afterwards, especially because my friend lived in a big old farmhouse in the middle of nowhere, but being scared was kind of fun So that was the first horror movie I watched! Since then I've gone through most of the "classics" like Friday 13th, Halloween, etc., helped by living with a housemate for a while who LOVED 80s horror movies In the past few years I've gotten heavily into Asian horror. Interestingly, the first time I watched "Ring" I REALLY didn't like it - but ended up being a big fan of Ring 2. After re-watching it a year or so later, though, I loved it My favourite Asian horror is 着信アリ (Chakushin Ari) or "One Missed Call". It's directed by Miike Takashi and stars Shibasaki Kou. It's the scariest and creepiest movie I've watched by far, and still freaks me out each time I watch it My favourite director is Kurosawa Kiyoshi who directed movies like "Cure", "Kairo" and "Kourei". Oh my, I'm rambling on today~! So what genres and movies does everyone else like? ;D

Hee, horror-films. I was the same as you are describing. I didn't dare watch horror-films when I was younger, but now I really like them (even though I panic and freak out and have nightmares weeks after seeing the film). Chakushin Ari is great. I went and saw it twice when it was playing at the cinemas here I'm glad I didn't have my clamshell-phone back then XDDD;; And Miike is an awesome director. I've seen lots of his movies. A lot of crazy stuff! Kairo was freaky ;; Can't remember much of what it was about, but I remember being utterly disturbed by it. I also went and saw The Eye when it was playing at the cinemas here, and wtf. That really freaked me out D: Hm.. apart from horror movies, though I have a thing for fantasy, science-fiction and musicals. Oh yes, I love musicals. I also love all the classic movies from the 80s. Back to the Future, The Goonies, E.T, etc, etc ^_^ I can't point to a very favourite film, though. It changes all the time and I watch tons of movies ;; Right now I think my favourite film would either be A Clockwork Orange or Nochnoi Dozor (Night Watch).

A lot of crazy stuff! Oh, that's sooo lucky~ We never got it at the cinema here. I had to buy a copy to watch it! But it was worth it. I have a little clamshell phone, and after watching Chakushin Ari, I put the ringtone from the movie onto my phone XD The second time I watched the film, we'd got to the finale, and my phone started to ring... I jumped about 8 feet into the air XD It was just my friend Yuri - I shouted at him soooo much Kairo was freaky ;; Can't remember much of what it was about, but I remember being utterly disturbed by it. I also went and saw The Eye when it was playing at the cinemas here, and wtf. That really freaked me out D: Kairo is the one about the "killer" website. It's very freaky And I liked The Eye too (again, I had to get it on DVD). I didn't watch The Eye 2 yet as I heard it was terrible, but I did see The Eye 0 (The Eye Infinity) - that was very weird, it couldn't decide whether to play itself for horror or for laughs! It was pretty funny in places but it was a strange direction to take the series. Seeing the main characters kill ghosts by wafting farts at them was just weird XD I haven't seen Night Watch yet - my friends watched it at FrightFest last year. I'm going to see it when I get a chance though - it looks good

A lot of people at my school and such got the ringtone from that film after the cinema release. I got used to it after a while xD;;; Ah! Yesh, I seem to remember more about Kairo now ;; but I also seem to remember some door sealed with red tape? Buh. I can't remember, and at the same time I know I don't really want to see the film again as I'll be freaked out all over again XD Watching The Eye at the cinema was creepy. I don't know what the beginning is like on the dvd release, but at the cinema after the logos of the movie companies and such the screen looks as though the guy working in the machine room of the cinema screwed up and that the film cut itself off, or started burning or.. you know things that can happen in the machine room of a cinema, so everyone turned their heads and got annoyed and laughed and stuff and then BOOM ghosts and icky scenes and whaaa D: and some creepy voice/text saying something along the lines of "scared yet?" or "got your attention?" or "it hasn't even started yet" or something (it's been a while I can't remember). It really, really freaked me out and I sat there feeling quite nauseous throughout the rest of the film D: Night Watch is highly recommended. Get the 2-disc UK version and watch the theatrical version featured on the second disc Awesome-ness on a stick. It isn't a horror movie, though. It's more of a fantasy thing. I love it to bits. Plus.. Russian is a cool language ^_^

I've seen:
Kairo/Pulse The Eye A Tale of Two Sisters Ring and Ring 2 Chakushin Airi
So far as far as Asian horror goes. And I have to say A Tale of Two Sisters/Pulse and Chakushin Airi induced the most covering of eyes and fear. ToTS was really bad in places! I felt Pulse went downhill at the end, I mean, where did that all come from??

Tale of Two Sisters and Night Watch are both really good! I can't believe I'm not the only one here who watches Russian films, hahaha. Speaking of which, twissie, have you (or anyone) seen "The Return"? That movie got to me in ways other movies never have... wow.
I like foreign films and films that are kind of out of the ordinary... I don't know how to explain it. I like love stories, but that has to be only one element. I like films like Amelie, Chocolat, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Lost in Translation, Kill Bill, Moulin Rouge, and anything with Russell Crowe in it XD I also love older films, especially Some Like It Hot, The Seven-Year Itch, Breakfast at Tiffany's, Sabrina, Duck Soup, My Name is Ivan, lots of other stuff. They certainly aren't all of the same genre, I know ^^; I like lots of stuff, I guess!

I haven't seen The Return, no. It's a Russian film? After seeing Night Watch and Day Watch I'm sort of lusting to see/hear more Russian stuff. I'll take that as a recommendation and see if I can find it anywhere Mmm~ Moulin Rouge was my favourite movie all through secondary school. It's still my all time favourite musical (I love musicals) and.. yeah. It's gorgeous and has an amazing story, great acting and fun play with music/songs/styles

A lot of people have said they didn't get the end of Kairo, but I thought it was really gorgeous and moving. I really want to watch it again now I'm visiting my parents at the moment so I have a lot of free time, and luckily I've brought my hard drive with me, so I think I might have to watch the movie again this week I might post about the ending after I've rewatched it. I always seem to end up understanding the endings to Asian movies that confuse the hell out of everyone else Well... not always... the ending to Shibuya Kaidan 2 was just stupid and made no sense XD Speaking of which (lol), anyone seen Jisatsu Circle (Suicide Circle / Suicide Club)? Love that movie I firmly believe that all H!P fans should see it - you'll never look at MoMusu or an idol group in the same way XD Sinisterrrrrrrr...

I love that film xD;;; I saw it for the first time before I was a H!P fan. I have a rabid H!P fangirl on my friendslist on LJ (well.. several now, after I got hooked too ) and I couldn't stop thinking (while watching the film for the first time) that Morning Musume was doing crazy brainwashing on all of their fans D: ^^;;; I love the music in the film, though. Rolly is too much fun. I haven't been able to find the film-version of "Mail Me" but I have the original (?) version. Not as good as the one in the film, but it's still fun to sing along xD;;

It was so very wrong Dessert are awesome XD It's a shame there doesn't seem to be a released Dessert version of Mail Me, because I do like Momoi Haruko's but theirs is cuter. I'm glad that the soundtrack has their other songs on it though The opening scene is one of the best I've ever seen XD I have a tendency to shout "sei, no!" while waiting on train platforms now... scares the hell out of my friends XD Hmmm, I might have to sing Mail Me at my birthday karaoke party now you know... and thoroughly creep everyone out Best idea ever! I'm thinking of watching Kairo again tonight, but I also have a couple of other Kurosawa Kiyoshi movies with me that I haven't watched at all yet, so I can't make up my mind... actually, having said that, Phone Booth is on TV here tonight, and it looks quite good, so maybe I'll just make a nest with my duvet in front of the TV instead I'm so sad that I can't find the other Ju-Rei / Ju-Lei movies anywhere, even for download, apart from the one that was released in the US! I got that on DVD and it's pretty good, but the others sound so awful and therefore funny! I sooooo want to watch them!

The death scenes are amazing (*shifty*), even the songs. When I auditioned here on O!P, I sang Dessart's "Write Once" as my audition song.

I just saw Silent Hill. Best game to movie adaptation I've ever seen. Quite honestly I'm left very impressed. It is a must-see for fans of the Silent Hill games, although.. if you don't like the whole cult plot and think that the second game is the best in the series then you might be disappointed. The movie follows more the storyline of the first game, although elements from the other games are tossed in as well. They mostly used music from the third game, but the music chosen was very appropriate. The movie definitely has the look and feel of Silent Hill. As mentioned, I am very impressed. I'm going to go see it again.. and I'll bring all my friends.

I'm going to go see it again.. and I'll bring all my friends. I also loved the movie. A lot of fans really disliked it, and I'll agree it was nowhere near as good as a Silent Hill GAME, but as a movie that HAD to adapt and cater to a wider market, it was great. It FELT like Silent Hill. The whole recreation of the town and monsters was just gorgeous, so much attention to detail and such wonderful closeness to the games. Cybil is LOVE!! Those trousers, my word I didn't like there being so many other people hanging about in the town as well (in the church at least)... it removed a lot of the horrible isolation of Silent Hill. Also the "let's explain the plot!" scene was ridiculous and blatantly just catering to movie-goers too stupid to work out the story and meanings for themselves. I also disliked the change for the reasons behind Alessa's burning and removing Dahlia's role as cult leader - I think that having changed Harry to Rose, it would have been utterly fascinating to explore the stark difference between Dahlia and Rose. One so desperate and mad she'll inflict such torment on her own daughter, and one so desperate and mad she'll do anything to PROTECT her own daughter. But still, overall, I loved it. Hearing Yamaoka-sama's music used in a movie like that was just beautiful, and there was SO many obscure references and nods that only the most hardcore of fans would spot (get the significance of the kids saying the "now I lay me down to sleep" prayer? ) I'm going to buy the DVD as soon as it comes out - and I SO hope we get a UFO ending XD

Sure, there is no way a movie can match the feelings of a game. Different medium, different way of telling a story. It's just like books never turn out the way they really are on the big screen either, but again. Different media, different ways of telling stories. That's just the way it works. I've never been bothered with the "OMG I can't believe they cut that out from the film, that was SO awesome in the book T_______T" hysteria, because I know that making a movie is completely different from writing a book. You can't use the same story telling techniques as you can when you write, and some things just can't be translated into movie material. I bet it's the same way, and even more so for a "from game to movie" adaptation. So.. I don't understand people who dislike the film just because the movie doesn't play out like a Silent Hill game. It's impossible for the movie to be like a game. Different media. So. I fully accept that. Cybil is huge amounts of love. I really loved that character, her costume.. everything. She rocks I didn't mind the people in the town. I felt it actually added to the creepiness. The clothes they wore and they way they behaved just completely freaked me out and the whole concept of people living like that also boggles the mind. I thought it fit in well with the nature of the Silent Hill presented in the movie. Again, I think the isolated feeling of the games works best in the games. If Rose had been running around alone (okay, with Cybil, but still) searching endlessly for her daughter with no other human contact I bet a movie audience would have found it dull and silly. Sure, creatures are scary and icky, but if all the encounters in the town were like that the movie would turn silly and lose some of it's suspense. "Let's explain the plot!"-scene? You mean the flashbacks thing in the hospital? I actually really, really enjoyed those. The style of them looked like cut-scenes of a game. They told the story wonderfully and it sent chills down my spine when some of the gaps were filled in. I really liked them. It's been a while since I played the first game, and after playing it through I have to say I couldn't get much from the plot (I read up on it afterwards because I couldn't figure it out) ; So I can't comment on the changes in any of the characters from the game. I heard rumors that there won't be any alternate endings on the DVD, but I refuse to believe that. It would be so in the spirit of the games to have alternate endings, and with DVDs it's possible. So yesh. I'm hoping for UFO, or otherwise different, endings on the DVD release too
